Iowa Limits Student Corn Consumption
The Des Moines Register is reporting that the University of Iowa Vice President for Student Services Philip Jones canceled a corn-on-the-cob eating contest scheduled as part of the school's celebration over their football team's game with in-state rival Iowa State.
The reason: The corn contest "encourages gluttony."
Can we please take ourselves a little more seriously? I mean, c'mon. First of all, corn is very healthy. If you're going to eat a lot of something, corn is much better than hot dogs or pies. Second, corn is tasty and fun. Eating corn off the cob is a traditional, American institution, entertaining in itself, and it also requires the expenditure of energy and coordination. Third, these kids can eat as much corn as they want anytime they want. They'll have their contest informally, only it won't be as fun.
Someone should fire this guy.
